Diary of a working mum of two toddlers on lockdown

The Genesis

I started experiencing suspected COVID symptoms just before the lockdown and was advised to self-isolate (was not tested).

By the time I recovered from my symptoms and started catching up on work, it was the official lockdown. With all the emotions of facing this new reality, my two kids became extremely sick with COVID symptoms and we were all advised to self-isolation.

While at home during the lockdown

I had to face the new reality of working from home fulltime with two toddlers. Saying I felt the pressure is an understatement but also having to manage sick kids at the beginning of the process added another challenge to the picture.

I quickly went into survival mode and was working from anywhere between 5:30am to 10pm on most days to make sure I still deliver to the highest standard. Fast forward to two weeks, I realise this was not sustainable for the period we are going to be on lockdown and the kids where much better.

I went back to the drawing board and became intentional about implementing a structure that will work for both the kids and us (parents). Fast forward to 8 weeks after being on lockdown, we had a structure that worked well for us. I am still trying to balance my working hours, but I am in a much better place with this now.

The Pros of the lockdown

  • We have been able to spend a lot of time together as a family.

  • I am spending a lot of time with my kids more than I will usually do; getting to know and understand them better. Also, my 20months old have been potty trained and my 3year old have improved with his speech. We have also identified areas of development we need to focus on.

  • I have become ok with my toddlers featuring on my meetings either via video or by nursery rhymes playing as background music.

  • It’s been refreshing to see all the support from different colleagues and engagement partners during this lockdown.

The Cons of the lockdown

  • I have been working on my kitchen table with the temptation of constantly snacking.

  • Working with kids is a constant juggling act

  • Being indoors with two toddlers 24/7 is no fun – but we make use of the garden for outdoor activities. We also do a lot of YouTube exercise routine and the kids love being part of it.

  • Constantly being on calls or conferences can be so draining.

Key takeaways from the lockdown

  1. Prioritising what really matters in this season is very key.

  2. No matter what situation you fine yourself in, you can make it work.

Let me know what has been your key reflections while on lockdown with your family.
